I Choo-Choo-Choose You

Valentine's day is less than two weeks away now and I keep getting bombarded by it.

Being a fat kid, I used to face Valentine's day with cold dread in my heart. Always hoping I'd get enough of them to not feel totally crushed by my own unpopularity. One year someone stole the meager takings I did get (from the paper bag 'mailbox' attached to my desk) and not only did I get no Valentines, I had to face the humiliation of a teacher-led witch hunt for the missing cards. Another year my two girlfriends and I decided to take the sting out of the loneliness of the day by attending a two-for-one Valentine's day movie, only to find out that the dateless had to pay full price. And we ended up sitting next to our high school principal on a (no longer) romantic date. Gross.

Old wounds mean I'll never be much of a fan of this holiday. Old wounds and ridiculously busy restaurants. Ollie and I have a tradition of spending the holiday on the couch with a movie. I make him Mac & Cheese. He gives me some variation of a teddy bear holding a heart. It's pretty good.

One thing I do like about Valentine's day are the valentines themselves, especially the old ones.

Nothings like ghosts, anthropormorphic meat and threatened suicide to really hammer in "I Love You".

Page of Bats has an amazing photostream of WTF valentines here, as well as a collection of valentines focusing on meat and weapons here.
